Best wishes for the festive season and the New Year!

Of course I can’t talk about 2017 without reflecting on 2016, a very exciting year as I took the plunge from being an employee to becoming self employed. All thanks to my lovely clients who decided to spend their hard earned money coming to my classes or booking an appointment to come and see me for physio. I can’t tell you how thankful and privileged I am to have had a small part in your journey to parenthood, whether it was for the first or the fifth time! So thank you, thank you, thank you!

Of course I’m already looking forward already to meeting lots of mums and babies (new and old!) in our baby massage and mum and baby yoga classes in the new year.

Baby massage is suitable for babies from birth to one year, although it’s easier with smaller babies as they’re generally not wriggling (or crawling) away as we’re massaging. We start with a gentle stretch and relax for the mums and then some massage for the babies and finish with a chat and a cuppa. As it’s a baby class, we expect babies to cry, so don’t let it put you off if your baby cries, you always hear it much more loudly than anyone else does!

Mum and baby yoga is a little more active than baby massage so I usually advise mums to start with baby massage and then move on to yoga. We start with a stretch out for the mums and then a quick massage for the babies, moving onto lots of fun moves for mum and baby and finishing off with a lovely relaxation session.

I give pregnancy pilates classes in Clonmel and Cahir. The venue in Cahir is St. Mary’s Parish rooms and in Clonmel, we’re in Clonmel Premier Physiotherapy Clinic. Classes are about an hour long and as well as exercise we cover breathing and positions for labour, pelvic floor exercises and other birth-related topics, before finishing the class with a short relaxation.

One of my favourite classes to teach is Gentlebirth weekend workshops. I have a new venue in Limerick in the beautiful Castle Oaks House Hotel in Castleconnell, while the Clonmel venue remains Clonmel Premier Physiotherapy Clinic. The aim of our workshops is a positive birth, in whatever form that is. For some families, it may be in hospital in an operating theatre, for others it may be a homebirth with a doula and midwife and for more, it will be something in between.

The most important thing is that it’s a positive experience for everyone. Gentlebirth gives you the tools to train your brain for positivity and calm during pregnancy and birth, as well as giving you unbiased information about policies and interventions around pregnancy and birth and the evidence for them. We also talk about comfort measures for labour and birth and how to decide what birth interventions are right for you and your family.

In 2017, I’m going to continue hosting the Friends of Breastfeeding Meetups in Clonmel Premier Physiotherapy Clinic (on a voluntary basis, with Eimear From Clonmel Premier Physiotherapy very kindly allowing us to use her facilities) on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. Hoping to see lots of new faces there over the next year!

well-mum-check-upI’m also offering a new service in Clonmel Premier Physiotherapy Clinic in 2017. The MAMMI study, which released results in late 2016, showed that many women feel that the post baby follow-up they receive could be better, so from January I’ll be doing ‘Well Mum Checks’.

Obviously, what we’ll be focusing on during your check will depend somewhat on any issues you are experiencing after the birth of your baby but may include: post natal wellness tips, back, pelvis, pelvic floor and tummy check, feeding positions, basic breastfeeding advice, how to carry your baby in a sling and safe return to exercise.

As a physiotherapist, experienced in both women’s health and paediatrics, I can also check your baby if you have any concerns, such as how to do tummy time or if your baby has talipes or plagiocephaly (flat head).  Your check-up will be about an hour long and will cost €60. I’m in the clinic on Mondays and Tuesdays but available for a phone call any time during the week.

Lastly I’ll be offering Doula services in Tipperary & Limerick and surrounding areas so if you think you’d like a doula for support during your pregnancy, labour and birth, and after the birth too, give me a ring or drop me an email (0879229708/ and we can have a chat!

Details of all my classes starting in January are below, just give me a call on 0879229708 if you’d like further information or to book.

Wishing you all a very happy and healthy 2017!
