About Louise

Louise gentle birth irelandMy name is Louise Murphy, I’m a Chartered Physiotherapist specialising in Pelvic Health. I’m also a qualified Pilates and Infant Massage instructor.

I have been working as a physiotherapist for fourteen years, since I graduated in 2015, mostly in the area of Pelvic Health for the last nine years.

Until 2016 I worked in a busy Maternity unit and in a public outpatient clinic assessing and treating mostly people with pelvic health issues. I realised that a lot of our effort in the healthcare system goes into treating problems after they happen, rather than helping people to avoid these problems in the first place.

So I began to explore ways I could help women to reduce their chances of having big tears, bladder and bowel issues after birth, unnecessary caesareans and traumatic experiences.

I found Gentlebirth. I loved the emphasis on information for parents, both on interventions that might be offered and ways of coping during labour. The fact that women’s thoughts and feelings about and during labour and birth could impact their experience jived with the research on pain in general that I’d been following and made total sense to me.

After speaking to some doulas, and women who had had doulas for their births and reading the evidence around doula support and the difference it makes, I went on to train as a birth doula. Since then, I have attended lot of births, each one different. Supporting and empowering families is something I absolutely love and I have a special place in my heart for every single family I have worked with. I feel so lucky to be doing something that I enjoy so much.

In my ‘real life’ I am wife to Vinny and mum to Anna, Jack and Katie who arrived in to the world very differently – via emergency caesarean, VBAC and a last VERY quick birth!  We are on the road a lot as we all enjoy playing and watching sports. My absolute favourite place is the woods where I go with my horse whenever I can for a bit of headspace.

Looking forward to supporting you through your pregnancy and beyond!
